Telling Stories that Matter
Award-winning journalist Colton Shone is the definition of a multimedia journalist. He shoots and edits video packages, works with sound to create picture-painting radio reports, and writes for one of the largest newspapers in Indian Country.
Colton joined the CBS 5 news team in October 2010 as a multimedia journalist. A Valley native, Colton was lucky he didn't have to travel far for his first on-air job. He started out as a radio reporter and anchor at News/Talk 92.3 KTAR in Phoenix and was there for nearly four years.
During his time at KTAR, Colton was awarded by the Radio Television Digital News Association with an Edward R. Murrow Award. He also won three Associated Press awards for his longform feature pieces. Many of his reports were heard across the county on ABC National Radio News.
A member of the Navajo Nation, Colton believes in giving back to his community by getting positive Native American stories out there. He also speaks at many workshops and schools trying to get Native American students interested in journalism. Colton is also a member of the Native American Journalists Association.
Throughout his time at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Colton was awarded with numerous college journalism awards. He even holds a champion title in the Hearst Journalism Awards Broadcast News competition.
Colton wants his reports to leave a mark with everyone. Getting people to care about what is going on is a challenge he takes on ambitiously everyday.
His favorite thing is getting your story, because everyone has a story to tell. Colton was born and raised in Phoenix, Ariz. He loves the hot summers and hates the cold. His younger sister is studying at Yale University and his mom is a hairstylist. In his spare time he likes working out, hiking and running. Above all else, Colton loves spending time with the woman he will marry November 11th, 2011!!!!
